November Opening! “Twelve” by Kate Davison Mitchell
“Twelve” is a show of paintings by San Francisco artist, Kate Davison Mitchell, created over a period of 12 years beginning in 1998 until the present. The work represents her inner journey that began after the sudden death of her father. Her grief brought her into a period of dark and angry paintings that are filled with ferocious imagery derived from her dreams. This imagery precipitated a long and arduous descent into an underworld, where she met her fragmented self, and used the act of painting to integrate darkness and light. Mitchell believes in the healing powers of the creative process. Trusting her imagery, she used intuition as her guide, emerging from her grief to reconnect with the natural world. The final paintings of the series, which are filled with sensual shapes of roots and trees, incorporate all the elements: earth, air, fire and water. At last, she encounters her renewing self, in all its robust and earthy complexity.
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 6th 7 – 10pm
