Esoteric: New Paintings by Karen Roze

Born in 1967 in Castro Valley, CA, Karen Roze was raised in the Bay Area. She received her BFA from Oakland’s California College of Arts in 1989. She apprenticed as a tattoo artist in 1992, opened Sacred Rose Tattoo in 1998, and in 2006 opened the SR2 gallery.  While her paintings, drawings, and tattoos are collected world-wide, Karen has a long history of exhibiting in the Bay Area.  In the past, her influences have ranged from the layered paint work of Francis Picabia, to the modern image combinations of James Rosenquist, and postmodern juxtapositions of David Salle. Humor, structural formalism, and comic figurative representations have been a recognizable theme in Karen’s paintings. Esoteric, a collection of new work, reflects a more personal style. The images are derived from Karen’s ongoing study of Hanmi Buddhism, energetic healing, and meditation.  Esoteric, showing March 6ththru April 28 th Monday – Sunday from 12-8pm, is a profound, multi-dimensional exhibit that should not be missed.
