UPCOMING SHOW: The Work of Fred Nocella

Opening Reception: Saturday, December 8th, 2012 6pm – 9pm

Artist Statement:

The striking photographs inside the “Bureau of Mines Manual of First Aid Instruction” are the point of departure for this body of work. The process of making paintings of these photographs offers a strategy for understanding why this source material is so compelling to me. These paintings are blended with even more found photographs, natural history, science textbooks, medical illustrations, clip art, schematic diagrams, and popular culture to produce a great stew of images. My wager is that by combining all of the things I am interested in, chance will reward me with new textures, meanings, and associations that could not be obtained any other way. Curiosity and anticipation sustain me through the laborious process of editing, combining, and layering.

UPCOMING SHOW: The Work of Julia Sackett

Opening Reception: Saturday, October 13th, 2012 6pm – 9pm

Artist Statement:

I see photography as a eulogy of memory, with no distinction between fiction and fact. Using photographic images and antique objects, I accentuate the void between my experience and past experience with acrylic transfers and casting methods. Taking slides of other people’s memories and distorting them over a space raises questions about the seemingly cozy sentimentality of memory and takes nostalgia to a different, more uncanny plane. These histories are inevitably fiction, as the photographic moment exists outside of living time.  Everyone experiences the poignancy of passing time, even when the forgotten moments aren’t even their own.

November Opening! “Twelve” by Kate Davison Mitchell

leave a comment »

“Twelve” is a show of paintings by San Francisco artist, Kate Davison Mitchell, created over a period of 12 years beginning in 1998 until the present.  The work represents her inner journey that began after the sudden death of her father.  Her grief brought her into a period of dark and angry paintings that are filled with ferocious imagery derived from her dreams.  This imagery precipitated a long and arduous descent into an underworld, where she met her fragmented self, and used the act of painting to integrate darkness and light.  Mitchell believes in the healing powers of the creative process.  Trusting her imagery, she used intuition as her guide, emerging from her grief to reconnect with the natural world. The final paintings of the series, which are filled with sensual shapes of roots and trees, incorporate all the elements: earth, air, fire and water.  At last, she encounters her renewing self, in all its robust and earthy complexity.

Opening Reception: Saturday, November 6th 7 – 10pm
