Muses & Madness: The Art of Patrushka

Opening Reception: Saturday, March 16th, 2013 7pm – 9pm

Artist Statement:

Working in many medias, from scratchboard to oil painting, Patrushka has created an eclectic array of images for this exhibition.
Fascinated with the ying and yang of life, the skull beneath the smile, the dark within the light and the good as well as the bad. Patrushka draws upon pop culture, politics, music, emotions, the human face and our natural world for inspiration.
The theme for this exhibit is a divergent binary: “Muses & Madness”
Muses focuses on artists, musicians, friends, cultural icons, causes and celebrities that she admires. Whether it be their artworks, their songs, their image or their happenstance in life – all have inspired and moved Patrushka to capture them in paint. Madness is used in a literal and a generalized way  and focuses on the dark and sometimes violent side of mankind, and the many gradations of insanity – whether it be in the way we treat our environment or in the way we treat those who dare to be different. Violent criminals, threatened species, abused women, emotive portraits and misfit personas whose “madness” has consumed them, all have found a place in Patrushka’s world. The body of work crosses the boundaries of the human condition, celebrating the wonderful and the weird, embracing the whole oddity that is humanity.
The artworks will be available for purchase and Patrushka will be present at the opening reception. If you’ve considered commissioning a portrait, Patrushka will also be available for order consultations. This will be an ideal opportunity to touch base and get a feel for her beautiful works. Patrushka and Sacred Rose Gallery are looking forward to seeing you there.

UPCOMING SHOW: The Work of Fred Nocella

Opening Reception: Saturday, December 8th, 2012 6pm – 9pm

Artist Statement:

The striking photographs inside the “Bureau of Mines Manual of First Aid Instruction” are the point of departure for this body of work. The process of making paintings of these photographs offers a strategy for understanding why this source material is so compelling to me. These paintings are blended with even more found photographs, natural history, science textbooks, medical illustrations, clip art, schematic diagrams, and popular culture to produce a great stew of images. My wager is that by combining all of the things I am interested in, chance will reward me with new textures, meanings, and associations that could not be obtained any other way. Curiosity and anticipation sustain me through the laborious process of editing, combining, and layering.
