Muses & Madness: The Art of Patrushka
Opening Reception: Saturday, March 16th, 2013 7pm – 9pm
Artist Statement:
Working in many medias, from scratchboard to oil painting, Patrushka has created an eclectic array of images for this exhibition.Fascinated with the ying and yang of life, the skull beneath the smile, the dark within the light and the good as well as the bad. Patrushka draws upon pop culture, politics, music, emotions, the human face and our natural world for inspiration. The theme for this exhibit is a divergent binary: “Muses & Madness”Muses focuses on artists, musicians, friends, cultural icons, causes and celebrities that she admires. Whether it be their artworks, their songs, their image or their happenstance in life – all have inspired and moved Patrushka to capture them in paint. Madness is used in a literal and a generalized way and focuses on the dark and sometimes violent side of mankind, and the many gradations of insanity – whether it be in the way we treat our environment or in the way we treat those who dare to be different. Violent criminals, threatened species, abused women, emotive portraits and misfit personas whose “madness” has consumed them, all have found a place in Patrushka’s world. The body of work crosses the boundaries of the human condition, celebrating the wonderful and the weird, embracing the whole oddity that is humanity. The artworks will be available for purchase and Patrushka will be present at the opening reception. If you’ve considered commissioning a portrait, Patrushka will also be available for order consultations. This will be an ideal opportunity to touch base and get a feel for her beautiful works. Patrushka and Sacred Rose Gallery are looking forward to seeing you there.

UPCOMING SHOW: The Work of Fred Nocella
Opening Reception: Saturday, December 8th, 2012 6pm – 9pm
Artist Statement:
The striking photographs inside the “Bureau of Mines Manual of First Aid Instruction” are the point of departure for this body of work. The process of making paintings of these photographs offers a strategy for understanding why this source material is so compelling to me. These paintings are blended with even more found photographs, natural history, science textbooks, medical illustrations, clip art, schematic diagrams, and popular culture to produce a great stew of images. My wager is that by combining all of the things I am interested in, chance will reward me with new textures, meanings, and associations that could not be obtained any other way. Curiosity and anticipation sustain me through the laborious process of editing, combining, and layering.

Upcoming Gallery Show: The Work of Joaquin Spengemann
Opening Reception: Saturday, June 16, 2012 6pm – 9pm
Artist Bio:
Joaquin Spengemann is a Santa Cruz native returned to his roots after an extended residency in the east bay. His collages are testimonies to excess and injustice, hubris and tyranny, salvation and redemption as they pay homage to and celebrate the fine craft of the illustrators and photographers whose work he dismembers and reorders. His work exalts the power of nature and scrutinizes the nature of power with recurring themes of greed, romanticism, nostalgia, propaganda and bloodlust. His most recent works betray a burgeoning penchant for the wisdom of alchemical hermeticism, and attempt through the glorious cartography born of the age of discovery to reveal the folly of statism, nationalism, and the currencies that bear their standards. The artist is currently examining the concepts of “value” and “worth” from an antediluvian perspective.

UPCOMING SHOW: The Art of Robert Juarez
Opening Reception: Saturday, November 5th, 2011 6pm – 10pm
Artist Bio:
Robert Juarez was born in San Francisco in 1961. A self-taught artist and tattooist, Robert utilizes the materials available to him within the California Federal prison system, in which he is incarcerated. Exquisitely detailed drawings of ballpoint ink on cotton handkerchiefs illustrate Latino cultural iconography and historical Mexican imagery, blended seamlessly together to form a subtle and vibrant collage. Robert’s work is poignant and subtle. There is a technical prowess with limited materials which inspires closer inspection. As a young child and teenager, Robert spent extensive time vacationing in Mexico where he personally studied the art and glyphs of the Aztec and Mayan pyramids, opening a door of artistic inspiration which influences much of his work today. Do not miss this opportunity to see and experience this beautiful and mysterious artwork.

UPCOMING SHOW: “The Major Arcana: Work by Karyn Crisis”
Opening Reception: Saturday, October 1st, 2011 6pm – 9pm
Artist Bio:
Karyn began oil painting in 2006, after leaving her touring band of 13 years, Crisis. She has been obsessed with the idea of “inner demon/darkness” as a power source, and with facing it as a process of self-acceptance en route to enlightenment; the inner demon and its role as teacher and guide to empowerment via self-knowledge, forgiveness, and unity for a higher good.
Karyn sees light in dark places.
She has chosen to express, through her art, this dark side, the power within it, and the controversial beauty therein. She uses archetypes in her paintings and drawings, whose power and beauty have universally been both admired and feared, and whose images have been molded into harmless, quiet, passive or evil symbols, despite their terrifying and benevolent truths: Angels, Witches, and Mythological Women. Karyn also incorporates her first-hand experience with these beings as a Medium, Clairvoyant, and Seer.
The exhibition runs October 1st, 2011 – November 1st, 2011
Gallery Hours: Monday – Sunday 12pm – 8pm
